DE STRAFFEN
Het verschil tussen een toegestane check en een straf is open voor interpretatie. Het blijft een bron voor onenigheid tussen fans, spelers en de ref. Kort gezegd zijn er twee soorten straffen te onderscheiden: kleine en grote.
KLEINE STRAFFEN
Spelers die een kleine straf krijgen worden voor twee minuten van het ijs gestuurd, zonder dat daarvoor een speler in de plaats kan worden ingezet. Scoort de tegenstander, dan eindigt de straf onmiddellijk. We zetten de meest voorkomende straffen voor je op een rijtje:

GROTE STRAFFEN
Een speler die een grote straf krijgen worden voor vijf minuten van het ijs gestuurd. Meestal gebeurt dit als er wordt gevochten. Beide spelers ontvangen dan vijf minuten straf. In dat geval kunnen deze spelers wel worden vervangen door een andere speler. Als een speler een grote straf krijgt die leidt tot (een poging tot) een blessure, dan wordt deze uit de wedstrijd gehaald. In dergelijke situaties moet een teamgenoot de straf voor deze speler uitzitten, zonder dat een vervanger mag worden opgesteld.
