Gefeliciteerd met het kampioenschap! Wat betekent deze titel voor jou?

Dank je wel! De afgelopen 6 of 7 jaar speelde ik in de herencompetitie en het betekent veel voor me dat ik voor het eerst een divisie op dit niveau won. Het heeft een enorme impact. Zeker als ik zie wat dit met de oudere jongens, de fans, en de club doet. Dat maakt het nog specialer.

Het was je eerste seizoen dat je voor de Tigers speelde. Wat ging er door je hoofd tijdens de laatste momenten van de beslissende finalewedstrijd?

Ik was tot het eind op het ijs. Toen er nog maar 5 seconden op de klok stonden, raakte ik een beetje in paniek. Ik wist niet wat te doen en ik keek naar de bank om te zien wat de andere jongens deden. Ze sprongen op het ijs. Wat gebeurde verwarde me een beetje en ik volgde de andere spelers. Toen begonnen het feest vieren.

Heb je na een paar maanden nog steeds een overwinningsroes?

Ik kijk nog wel naar de foto’s en video’s van die avond. Het is altijd leuk om de teamgenoten te zien en terug te gaan naar dat moment en het opnieuw te beleven.

Wat was voor jou het beste moment?

Het mooiste was toen we teruggingen naar de kleedkamer. Je kon de vreugde zien, de champagne die stroomde, het pure geluk bij alle spelers en clubleden.

Wat waren de belangrijkste factoren in het succes van de Tigers?

Ik denk het team en het begin van het seizoen. Toen ik erbij kwam, waren we een week met het team in België. Daar leerden we elkaar kennen. De hoofdfactor die ons kampioen maakte, was onze samenwerking. Onze teamgeest was uniek. Zoiets heb ik nooit eerder meegemaakt. Vooral in de play-offs wist iedereen wat het doel was. Niemand was groter dan het team. Iedereen volgde de instructies van John op. Ik denk dat dat de sleutel was.

Wat was voor jou het meest memorabele moment van dit seizoen, buiten het kampioenschap?

Calvin noemde dat al in zijn interview. In de play-offwedstrijd tegen Zoetermeer stonden we thuis met 5-1 achter en toch wonnen we die wedstrijd. Voor mij was hoe we terugkwamen en de sfeer die er toen was, het beste moment van het seizoen. Niemand geloofde dat we die wedstrijd na twee periodes zouden kunnen winnen maar dat deden we wel.

Wat was het keerpunt?

Ik denk dat niemand geloofde dat het echt klaar was. Er waren individuele spelers die optraden en de weg lieten zien. Daarna gaf iedereen alles.

Wie of wat heeft jou dit jaar het meest geïnspireerd?

Als je naar Calvin Pohlman kijkt, had hij aanvankelijk geen best seizoen. Door de manier waarop hij vooruitgang boekte in de play-offs, scoorde hij belangrijke doelpunten. Het was goed hoe hij optrad en ons vooruit hielp.

Zijn er, nu je kampioen bent geworden met de Tigers, nog doelen die je persoonlijk wilt bereiken en welke doelen zou je graag willen bereiken met de Tigers?

Ik heb nooit aan persoonlijke doelen gedacht, dat is hoe ik ben. Als team wil ik het allemaal opnieuw beleven. Ook om beter samen te spelen. Ik ijshockey om samen te spelen en samen te winnen.

Veel teams bereiden zich al voor op volgend seizoen. Op welk vlak moeten de Tigers sterker worden om opnieuw de titel te pakken?

Wij waren het beste team. We hebben misschien niet de beste individuele spelers, maar vergeleken met andere teams hadden we een heel sterke derde en vierde linie. Als we onze manier van samenwerking en de goede sfeer in de kleedkamer vasthouden en ons blijven verbeteren, denk ik dat we volgend jaar een heel moeilijk team zijn om te verslaan.

Welke lessen uit dit seizoen neem jij mee in de voorbereiding op volgend seizoen?

Vorig jaar hadden we het na de kerstvakantie lastig en verloren een paar wedstrijden. Belangrijkst is positief te blijven op slechte momenten. Niet vasthouden aan de moeilijke tijd, maar onze flow weer vinden.

Waarom denk je dat je na de pauze een aantal moeilijke wedstrijden hebt gespeeld?

Ik denk dat we dachten dat we de wedstrijden net zo zouden winnen zoals voorheen. Maar zo werkt het niet. Als je wilt winnen, moet je je volledig inzetten en all-in zijn. Op een moment verloren we de concentratie. Nu denk ik dat dat goed voor ons was. We herpakten ons voordat de play-offs begonnen.

Zijn er specifieke aspecten van je eigen spel waar je aan wilt werken?

Schaatsen is mijn kracht, maar ik heb het gevoel dat ik er nog meer aan moet werken om mijn benen nog sneller te laten bewegen. Vooral bij kleine bochten. Natuurlijk wil ik meer doelpunten maken dan vorig jaar. Dat is altijd een doel. Schaatsen en scoren dus!

Dit is het eerste seizoen dat veel games uitverkocht waren. Ook in andere steden. Wat moet er gebeuren om de sport populairder te maken in Nederland?

We moeten beginnen met bouwen vanaf de onderkant. Ik denk door samen te werken met de stad Amsterdam en scholen uit te nodigen voor wedstrijden.

Florida Panthers of Edmonton Oilers?

Florida, omdat het voor een Finse aanvoerder de eerste keer zou zijn dat hij de Stanley Cup wint.

Is er iets dat je met de fans wilt delen?

Ik hou van de sfeer. Vooral tijdens de wedstrijden tegen Zoetermeer en Nijmegen. Het was iets wat ik nooit eerder heb meegemaakt. Ik hoop dat we meteen na de start van het nieuwe seizoen dezelfde sfeer zullen hebben. Als speler vind ik het echt bijzonder als de tribunes vol zijn.

Congratulations on the championship! What does this title mean to you personally?

Thank you! It means a lot. It’s the first time I’ve won something at a level like this. I have been playing in the men’s league for the past 6 or 7 years. Winning for the first time is a big thing, especially after seeing what it meant to the team and the older guys who have been with the team for many years. It made it even more special to see what it meant for the fans and the club. It had a huge impact.

It was your first time playing with the Tigers as well as a win. Can you take us through the final moments of the final match? What was going through your mind?

I was on the ice during the last minute. When there were 5 seconds on the clock, I started to panic a little bit. I didn’t know what to do. I looked at the bench to see what the other guys were doing, and they were jumping onto the ice. I was a bit confused about what was happening, but I followed the other guys and then we started to celebrate.

Are you still on a high after a couple of months?

I still watch the pictures and videos of it sometimes. It’s always fun to see the teammates and to go back to that moment and relive it again.

What was the best moment for you?

The best moment was when we went back to the locker room. You could see the joy, the champagne spilling. You could see pure happiness on all of the players and club members.

What do you think were the key factors in the success of the Tigers?

I think it all started with the team and the beginning of the season. When I came here for the first time, we had a week with the team in Belgium. We got to know each other. Since that moment, I think the factor that made us champions was that we worked together. Our team spirit was one of a kind. I never experienced something like that, especially in the playoffs. Everybody knew what the goal was. No one was bigger than the team. Everybody followed John’s instructions. I think that was the key.

What was the most memorable moment of this season for you, outside of the championship?

Like Calvin said in his interview about the 5-1 moment against Zoetermeer in the playoffs, we were down at home and then we won that game. I think that was the best moment of the season. How we came back. And what an atmosphere there was. No one believed we could win that game after 2 periods, but we did.

What do you think was the turning point in that match?

I think that nobody believed it was really finished. Some individual players stepped up and showed the way. Then everybody started to give everything they had

Who or what inspired you the most this year?

If you look at Calvin Pohlman, individually he didn’t have the best season at first. But the way he stepped up in the playoffs, he scored so many important goals. It was really good how he stepped up and took us forward.

Now that you have become champion with the Tigers, are there any goals you still want to achieve personally and which goals would you like to achieve with the Tigers?

I never thought about personal goals. It’s the way I am. But as a team, I want to experience it all over again. And to play better together. It’s the reason I play hockey: playing together, winning together.

Many teams are already preparing for next season. In which area do you think the Tigers need to strengthen in order to win the title again?

We were the best team. We may not have the best individual players, but we had a really strong third and fourth line compared to other teams. The way we work together and the atmosphere in the locker room: if we keep these things going, if we keep improving these things, I think we will be a really hard team to beat next year.

What lessons from this season will you take into the preparation for next season?

Last year we had some hard times after the Christmas break, we lost a few games. So the main goal is to recognize when you’re having a bad moment and to stay positive. Not to let the hard times continue, but to find our flow again.

Why do you think you had some difficult games after the break?

Every team has them. I think at some point, we thought we would win the games like we had before. But hockey doesn’t work like that. You have to be fully committed if you want to win the games. You have to be all in. We lost concentration at some point. But I think that was good for us. We got it back before the playoffs started.

Are there any specific aspects of your own game that you want to work on?

Skating is my strength, but I feel like I have to work on it even more. Especially the small turns and moving my legs even faster. Of course, I want to score more goals than last year. That is always a goal. So, skating and scoring!

This is the first season a lot of games were sold out. In other cities as well. What do you think needs to happen to make the sport more popular in Holland?

We have to start building from the bottom. I think working together with Amsterdam as a city, working together with schools, inviting kids to the games, etc.

Florida Panthers or Edmonton Oilers?

Florida, because it would be the first time for a Finnish captain to win the Stanley Cup.

Is there anything you would like to share with the fans?

I really love the atmosphere, especially during the games against Zoetermeer and Nijmegen. It was something I never experienced before. I really hope we’ll have the same atmosphere right after the new season starts. As a player, it is really special when the rink is fully packed.
